Abstract
The Armys Center of Battlefield Excellence in Human-Centric Command Control Decision Making is exploring how to use information visualization to enable collaborative sensemaking. The goal is to provide a common operating picture with shared situation awareness in the context of dynamic task situations. We have developed a Sensemaking Support System S3, a prototype sensemaking visualization tool with situation understanding capability and knowledge discovery components. We experimentally validate the utility of the tool through series of experiments from a set of minimally constructed stories MCS that contain the saliencies of unstructured battlefield information dynamics. The results show the followings a the perception rating of S3 with respect to sensemaking cognitive measures was highly significant b the problem scenarios MCS were highly significant and there were noticeable interaction effects between the cognitive measures and the problem types. Generally, the S3 software needs further improvement in representation fidelity of problems that mimic battle field situations. This is shown by the poor weighted ratings in a more chaotic scenario MCS3.
